Music

Being one of the more pleasurable things in life and having three aspects: Melody, harmony and rhythm, which the honoured reader already knows.

(a little larger)

When I was a young and stupid little boy I knew nothing of music and its enchanting power over the human heart. Only later when I became old and foolish I recognized that music is one of the most rewarding practices one can do, though not in a material sense. (There's an old joke: How to make a million as a musician? Start with three.)
Then I practiced a little and - lo! - became a musician who soon played with the greatest artists of all times! Here's a list of some of them:

Donovan
Queen
J. J. Cale
Bee Gees
Herbert Haas
Supertramp
Santana
Dire Straits
Ougenweide
Traffic
Ella Fitzgerald
Eugen Cicero

... and many, many more, as would fit into my CD player. I even tried to play with Beethoven once, but he wouldn't hear me.

At school I had to play violin, which was a disaster. They kept me in the school orchestra  because I was the only one in the third violin who could count through the rests.

Later I played saxophone in a rock band without having learned it properly, which was, er... an interesting experience. I like saxophone, though. On almost no other instrument cacophonies can be created with less effort.

Mostly I play drums now, which sounds something like this:

This is pretty advanced and cannot be played easily.

I used to play the recorder in a jazzy-funky fashion, but now I tend to work out the more sacral aspects of this beautiful instrument. My old school recorder (which I got when I was 6 years old) has been with me on all my journeys and is a sort of sentimental travel companion.

Recently I have become bold enough to play guitar and sing in public. There are many songs suitable for that. I like the Wahlwies song most, and "In your mind" by Johnny Cash.

As well I can do a little folk-doodledoodledoo on the piano. Earlier, when I was still with the Wahlwieser Musikverein, I played other things such as cymbals, xylophones, glockenspiels, tambourines, bongoes, big drums, medium drums, small drums and tiny drums until they threw me out for being out of time.

When I was a student I sang in the student's choir "Jede Woche Anders" ("Different Every Week"). I even had the pleasure of co-founding and conducting for a while. Here are some of the members:

I have also arranged some music, mostly for the choir. They are available here as MIDI and/or Noteworthy Composer files.

German English
Die Getränke sind frei! Wer kann sie bezahlen?
Man ruft sie herbei aus durstigen Qualen.
Kein Mensch kann sie missen, und mag's ihn verdrießen,
Es bleibet dabei: Die Getränke sind frei!
The drinks are free! For who can pay them?
You call for them out of thirsty agonies.
Nobody may miss them, and may it displease him,
Once and for all: The drinks are free!

Some .wav files must be lying around in a cupboard somewhere... I'll put them here if I find them.

Right now I am trying a little composing... which is difficult. Currently I am at a Bach-style choral named "O Herr, schmeiss Hirn vom Himmel" ("O Lord, Throw Brain From Heaven"), but it will take some time.

There are many other things which can be said about music, but they have already been said elsewhere. That is why this page is ending here.
