The New Money

Which is called Euro and Cent, thereby creating much confusion, which to relieve the reader of is the aim of this page. A calculator is also provided for convenience. The inspiration for this wonderful idea comes from Helge Breitsprecher.

The reader may know that the whole of Europe has changed currency on January 1st, 2002. Old and loved currencies had to be abandoned with more or less struggle and strife. In Greece there has been a discussion whether the implementation of the new currency didn't actually violate the constitution.

I feel that on the whole it makes things more complicated to think in Euro and Cent, instead of Mark and Pfennig. This is why I think we should adopt new words for each and every coin and bill, in order to make it easier for everybody. This has been done by the general public with the old bills before: they called them "Zwanni", "Fuffi", "Blue one", or "Brown one". In the new millennium we should use a more consistent system, though.

My proposal is to use the old names for coins wich have proved to be useful for centuries! So why should we not use them?

Here's the naming system:

Coin/Bill New Name

1 cent coin

Heller

2 cent coin
Kreuzer

5 cent coin
Groschen. A Groschen used to be 10 Pfennig. So the value remains about the same.

10 cent coin
Zehnt. Very easy to memorize.

20 cent coin
Gulden

50 cent coin
Mark. The value is about the same as that of the old Mark.

1 euro coin
Taler

2 euro coin
Batzen
Reichsmark
Reichstaler
Reichsbatzen
Goldmark
Goldtaler
Goldbatzen
Vogtsmark

This convenient system is structured in an easily comprehensible way:
The names of the 50 cent coin, 1 euro coin and 2 euro coin - Mark, Taler and Batzen - are simply prefixed with the syllables "Reich-", "Gold-" and "Vogts-" (the latter only for Mark) to multiply their value with 10, 100 and 1000. The logic is simple: Reich is better than nothing, Gold is even more than reich, and Vogt is impossible to be topped (for this topic please see www.dervogt.de).

You will agree that this system makes sense. I have provided a small calculator for practicing purposes below which will convert a given amount in euro and cent to the new naming system.

Please help to propagate this system by using it. Everybody should know about something so easy and simple. You can also help by making a donation for my New Money Names Propagation Fund!
