The reader may know that the whole of Europe has changed
currency on January 1st, 2002. Old and loved currencies had to be abandoned
with more or less struggle and strife. In Greece there has been a discussion
whether the implementation of the new currency didn't actually violate the constitution. I
feel that on the whole it makes things more complicated to think in Euro and Cent, instead
of Mark and Pfennig. This is why I think we should adopt new words for each and
every coin and bill, in order to make it easier for everybody. This has been
done by the general public with the old bills before: they called them
"Zwanni", "Fuffi", "Blue one", or "Brown
one". In the new millennium we should use a more consistent system, though. My
proposal is to use the old names for coins wich have proved to be useful for
centuries! So why should we not use them? Here's the
naming system:
This convenient system is structured in an easily
comprehensible way:
The names of the 50 cent coin, 1 euro coin and 2 euro coin - Mark, Taler and
Batzen - are simply prefixed with the syllables "Reich-",
"Gold-" and "Vogts-" (the latter only for Mark) to multiply
their value with 10, 100 and 1000. The logic is simple: Reich is better
than nothing, Gold is even more than reich, and Vogt is impossible to be topped
(for this topic please see www.dervogt.de). You will
agree that this system makes sense. I have provided a small calculator for
practicing purposes below
which will convert a given amount in euro and cent to the new naming system. Please help to propagate this
system by using it. Everybody should know about something so easy and simple.
